Terry Lynn Ford Jr., 24, of Cumberland, was arrested on Friday, Feb. 28, following a months-long investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, authorities said.

Fire crews responded to a 2005 Toyota Camry Solara engulfed in flames outside 883 Patterson Avenue around 8 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2024, officials said

Investigators later determined the fire was deliberately set using an explosive device, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage to the car and a nearby home, authorities said.

Ford initially told investigators the car had been inoperable for months and claimed he woke up to ‘boom’ sounds before seeing the vehicle ‘blow up’ and attempting to put out the fire..

However, after months of investigation, detectives identified Ford as the suspect, alleging he used an explosive device to start the fire, according to investigators..

Ford was charged with:

  • Possession of an explosive device with intent;
  • Manufacturing/possession of a destructive device;
  • Second-degree arson;
  • Malicious burning first-degree;
  • Malicious burning second-degree;
  • Malicious destruction of property.

He was initially held without bond but was later released after a judiciary bail review on Thursday, officials said.
